The fluorescence is very similar to that of barite with monovalent silver as activator. It is thought that silver is the cause, but a direct link is not yet demonstrated.

The red fluorescence is similar to that of calcite-Mn. Gorobets states that the cause is intrinsic. Nevertheless not all rhodochrosite fluoresces.
